An Upcoming Gift For Nature

This exercise is an experimental exploration of new materials and narrative design. It reflects on the designer’s role in urban ecological sustainability, questioning how we can achieve symbiosis between city and nature, and balance taking and giving.
Drawing on my contrasting living experiences in Sweden and China — where Gothenburg offers close, immediate access to nature, while Chinese megacities often feel disconnected and heavily artificial, I explored how design might give new value to discarded materials and rebuild positive links between people and nature.
Using natural materials from Bältespännarparken and my daily waste, I experimented with processes such as drying, fragmenting, and reconstructing to create compost-inspired “gifts.” These textures and organic structures were then visualized in a small booklet dedicated to nature.
For me, this project is both a material exploration and a way to reconnect with nature. A truly sustainable lifestyle is not easy but worth pursuing. Only when cities are no longer isolated from nature can we return to a more healing, natural state.
