Cultural Shock |

This practice is a series of short stop-motion animations that involve processes like scriptwriting, character design, scene composition, and frame-by-frame shooting.
I interviewed immigrants living in Gothenburg from Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, the United States, Indonesia, and a second-generation immigrant from Africa. They shared their first impressions and experiences upon arriving in Sweden — a mix of curiosity, excitement, loneliness, confusion, and awkwardness... These stories provided rich content and diverse perspectives for the animation series.
For me, this project was not only a comprehensive exercise in interviewing, information synthesis, and stop-motion techniques but also an important personal process for understanding others, processing my own feelings, and adapting to a new cultural environment.
Elizabeth
"In my own country, intimate gestures like French kissing rarely happen in public. But in Sweden, it seems completely normal and natural. The first time I saw it, I felt so awkward!I didn’t even know where to look."
"When I came to Sweden, I felt mostly excitement and anticipation. I was really curious about the life and culture here. I arrived with an open mind, eager to meet new people and explore the unknown."
2. EXCITEMENT 兴奋
Josha
3. WORLD CITIZEN
Xin
"After coming here, what impressed me most was the diversity of cultures. I no longer feel like I belong to just my own cultural background. As I’ve met different people and experienced new lifestyles, I've gradually realized that I’m becoming more open-minded, as if I were slowly turning into a global citizen. This transformation makes me feel like I’ve been reshaped. Sometimes it’s uncertain, but more often it feels like I’ve stepped into an entirely new world."
To respect the privacy of participants who preferred not to appear on camera, I chose to represent them through the initial letter of their last name, rather than their portraits. Each designed letter visually echoes the content of their stories, enhancing the visual identity of the project.
