Messy | AR

Messy is an augmented reality (AR) interactive spatial narrative exhibition.

HDK-Valand, the Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg, is currently housed in a century-old building but will relocate to a new campus in 2027. This project uses AR technology to visually and spatially reconstruct the future campus site. In the context of urban development, can the boundaries of an art space be redefined? Can the artistic value of an old building be reactivated in a new environment? These questions form the core of this project.

From the perspective of an international student and visitor, I extracted elements representing the “old HDK” — including architectural textures, graffiti, and distinctive details, and integrated them with 3D models of the new HDK space to create multiple virtual forms. These forms are “layered” onto the existing new campus buildings through AR, allowing visitors to view them via their phones and embark on an experience that blurs the line between reality and virtuality. Participants can physically walk along the existing architecture while simultaneously exploring the virtual space on their screens, freely interacting with digital objects along the way.

Technically, these virtual spaces can exist indefinitely online, extending the spirit of the art campus into the future. For me, this project is an intriguing experiment in preserving urban architectural memory through new media.

What can an art school be? How do you define an art school? Art school is an indefinable place full of freedom. The current HDK building is a place that is constituted of year after year out of layers upon layers of artistic work. And when you look around in our studio, there’re art pieces and messes everywhere. Compare to the new school with huge glass walls and open-plan offices, it seems that some beauties and free, artistic souls are left behind. And those are what I want to show in this project, and at the same time use new technology to explore the questions mentioned in the beginning.

Using Augmented Reality I create a world with all the objects lying, hanging, and standing on horizontal and perpendicular planes. The shapes of the objects are based on Kuben, Längan, and Artisten which are the building components of the new school. For the visual part, I collected some sketches and textures I noticed in the current HDK building and re-edited and recombine them.

Welcome to the messy world.
